TYLER’S cell phone rang just as he closed the door to his office for the night. Mark had already left with files in hand, and the list of people and places they would visit tomorrow was set prominently on his desk for addressing first thing in the morning. It was still daylight outside, and the chances of Sean being home were low considering time was running out to complete his current job before the rain came, but at least it gave him time to make a decent dinner tonight.
His initial thought that this was Sean calling just to make sure Tyler remembered he would be late again vanished with a look at the caller ID, however. It was a local number, though one he didn’t recognize. He thumbed the phone on as he moved to the stairs.
“Hey, I was just wondering if you were free for dinner,” came the low, smooth, and familiar voice Tyler hadn’t yet managed to find time to call. “Well, if I can pry you away from that boyfriend of yours, that is. Unless you want to invite him along and let him help split the bill?”
“Hey, if isn’t our favorite Lt. Baxter,” Tyler answered, smiling into his cell. “You’re never going to believe I’ve been meaning to call you, are you?”
“Not for a second,” Danny Baxter answered immediately. “But I’ll still have dinner with you, if you’re available. I know a great little Italian restaurant that’s got a two for one special going on tonight. Not to mention the all-you-can-eat breadsticks.”
“If you’re talking about that pizza place on Third like I think you are, I’ll pass,” Tyler laughed. “Haven’t got the stomach to handle the indigestion afterwards. Besides, I’ve got dinner plans with my man tonight, so how about lunch tomorrow?”
“Yeah, I should have known you’d wimp out of double-crust pepperoni with extra jalapeños,” Danny grumbled good-naturedly, though his next words were entirely serious. “I do need to talk to you though. About some things you’re not going to find in the papers.”
“Something about Jamie Carroway?” Tyler asked, hoping that was the case, though he tried not to sound like it. “You know, I really didn’t mean to put you on the spot yesterday—”
“No,” Danny cut him off quietly. “Not Jamie Carroway. Miles Trubett.”
Tyler froze, but he didn’t need to ask. Lt. Baxter offered the rest willingly.
“You probably already know he escaped the penitentiary a little over a week ago,” Danny continued. “Until today, the search for him has been limited to the other side of the state. But word came down today that the search is being expanded, and the whole department was put on alert to be on the lookout right here at home. We’re not releasing that to the press just yet, but—” He paused, and Tyler heard him sigh. “—I just thought you needed to know. We have nothing to say anything just yet, but… be careful, Tyler. As long as he’s on the loose, don’t get too comfortable anywhere, anytime. You hear what I’m saying?”
Tyler had to swallow before he could speak.
